William arrived as an 11-year-old and therefore should have remembered all the places he had lived. He also stated: "I am married, wife's residence, Murrurundi. I have nine children: 3 males and 6 females, one resident in Queensland; eight in NSW." Further on in his statutory declaration: "My age is 71 years, and I was born on the 10th day of June in the year 1841 at Luchausen in the Nassau in the Country of Germany. • William 1874-1893
  • John 1877-????
  • Sarah Johanna 1880-1882
  • Laura 1888-1892

Gillian Baker notes (June 2001): I have been on a long hunt for the property that Stoltenbergs lived on when they first married and I have found it (I think). I have also been given some information on the land holdings of Andrew and Henry Dries around Ravensworth. Old William Dries was listed as a orchardist or gardener and his landholding and stock records seem to indicate he was what we would call a market gardener. John Stoltenberg lived close by and may have helped his father-in-law. Andrew and Henry on the other hand seemed to have made their living from stock.

Family tradition (via one of Catherine Murray's daughters) is that he was nevertheless interned for a time as a "German" during the First World War, but was released after "proof" was obtained that he was Alsatian French [which is obviously not true].

This couple's headstone at Morpeth states:
Johanna Dries died 1932 April 02 aged 75

JCM originally owned a butchers shop in Maitland. This couple went to Taree for a short time and then to Arncliffe, before moving on to Burwood, and Denistone. All up, Catherine and JCM had 12 children, says John Toohey.

Based on original research kindly shared by Barbara Ames (a descendant) and a later, more detailed chart by Maureen Crawley. This line has since been been further researched by Gillian Baker (also a descendant) who owns copies of photographs of William and Catherine Dries (nee Dries) and Barbara and John Stoltenberg, and may have access to pictures of John and Johanna as well. I can provide her E-mail address if you seek more information. Gary Standen (see above) also supplied additional dates, and Arthur Passtoors and Anne Dries kindly helped with their branches.
