There is indeed an 1882 registration of the birth of a Mary Ann Dreis without any father, but why would she then be described as the illegitimate daughter of this man? Answer (Gillian Baker): Prior to 1902 legislation, a prior-born illegitimate child was not legitimized by the parents' marriage. Mary Ann was William's daughter born out of wedlock and thus still illegitimate in 1897.
